Chromic Acid (Chromium Trioxide CrO3) is widely used in metal finishing, wood preservation and in Manufacturing of some organic chemicals. It is a strong oxidizer and dissolves readily in water.
Chromium/iron catalysts are mainly used in high temperature shift reactions. Catalysts are usually chromium (III) oxide and iron oxide formulations so generally only a small proportion of chromium trioxide is used in catalyst manufacture.
Small scale laboratory use of chromium trioxide
Chromium trioxide is used in combination with sulphuric acid on a small scale in laboratories for the oxidation of alcohols to carboxylic acids and ketones. It is also used in COD determination as a strong oxidiser.
